Prior to arriving in New Zealand my budget for this country was one of the big unknowns in preparing for the trip. This is because we were planning to buy a campervan (rather than rent), and had no guarantees how much money we’d get back when it came to selling. Additionally New Zealand is renowned for being a fairly expensive country to travel in, which given the amazing adventure sports on offer its not surprising costs add up.

Over the 72 days I spent in New Zealand the costs amounted to $5,336 total. And averaged out at $74.11 per day. (All costs are in NZ dollars btw not USD!)

Travel Budget – Everest Base Camp Trek

This is how much I spent over 15 days while completing the Everest Base Camp Trek:

Accommodation
1,650NPR total
110NPR per night
Accommodation on the trek is cheap. I never paid more than 300NPR for a twin room. Two rooms I stayed in had views of Everest and both cost 200NPR. Anywhere else in the world you’d pay hundreds of dollars for a view like that!

Travel Budget – Nepal

Before leaving for Nepal I set aside a travel budget of £600 ($860) per month. This turned out to be about right.

Your budget for Nepal will very much depend on whether or not you plan to do any trekking, as this tends to be where the costs add up. I spent 25 days trekking during my 52 day stay in Nepal, so my budget is likely to be higher than those who plan to stay at a lower altitude.

Travel Budget – Istanbul

The first stop on my RTW trip was somewhat impromptu. When researching flights to Nepal we found Turkish Airlines offered a stopover in Istanbul at no extra cost so thought why not.

As I had not originally planned to visit Istanbul it was imperative to keep costs down and happily I only spent £180 over the 7 days.
